Empire Postcards: This costume was originally featured in the Berbati's Pan Secret Show performance about ghosts of colonialism. The original tall shoes were made of dozens of rubber thongs that Heather & I glued together. We painted over the garrish colors as we were dashing out the door to the performance after sewing all week. To our dismay, we found out we had used oil-based gesso. Notwithstanding, the show went on, white tracks and all, but the shoes themselves began to spontaneously erode throughout the show as the thongs came unglued. Balanced precariously on our failing platforms, we could not move at all, and Heather did a graceful faceplant on her way offstage. These wooden thongs based on shorter Japanese clogs were a better solution to the dilemma of adding height. The next pair I made were two feet tall, hand sculpted, covered in copper, and sported Berkenstock soles for comfort.
